The UFC heads to Melbourne, Australia for Saturday’s UFC 234 fight card. The card features a main event bout between middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and No. 4 ranked contender Kelvin Gastelum. In the co-headliner, Israel Adesanya faces former middleweight kingpin, Anderson Silva. On Thursday, the promotion holds a pre-fight press conference for the February 9 event.



Whittaker jumped from welterweight to middleweight in November 2014. Whittaker has not lost since he moved to the 185-pound division. His winning streak currently stands at nine consecutive fights. He claimed the interim middleweight title in 2017 when he defeated Yoel Romero by unanimous decision. He was later elevated to undisputed champion when Georges St-Pierre surrender that tile shortly after he claimed the belt with a submission win over Michael Bisping.



Whittaker’s first title defense was supposed to be against Romero, but Romero failed to hit the championship weight on the scale. Because of that, the bout was made a non-title fight. Whittaker was victorious in that June 2018 contest, winning by split decision. He has not fought since then due to injuries.





Gastelum, who also moved up from welterweight to compete at middleweight, is on a two-fight winning streak. He knocked out Bisping in November 2017. He followed that with a split-decision win over Ronaldo Souza in May 2018.



Adesanya joined the UFC in 2018. He made an immediate impact in the middleweight division. Adesanya went 4-0 last year and win three “Performance of the Night” bonuses. There’s a strong chance that he will fight the winner of the main event if he can get past Silva.
